Swing Into Spring, 1958

This is a video from "Swing Into Spring" from 1958 on NBC, hosted by Dave Garroway. In an after-hours-style setting with Benny Goodman, Harry James, Teddy Wilson, Red Norvo and Arvell Shaw do a bit of jamming together with singers Ella Fitzgerald and Jo Stafford. Ella does a haunting "I've Got A Right To Sing The Blues," then Goodman burns into "Limehouse Blues." Jo asks the musical question, "How Come You Do Me Like You Do?" Goodman follows with "Poor Butterfly," then it's Ella swinging "Hard-Hearted Hannah." Jo brings it back to melancholy with a beautiful "I've Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)," with some nice muted trumpet work from James and Wilson's wonderful piano. It's all topped off with Ella and Jo sharing vocal duties on "St. Louis Blues."

The picture quality isn't great, but the sound is fine, thankfully. Wonderful stuff.

I have this on CD and videotape. What an assemblage -- and swing they do!
