Goodbye, Old Friend

I lost my kitty Felix today. He'd been in the kitty hospital since Sunday, and was not getting any better. His sister & brother are still roaming the house searching for him. Fletcher, especially, misses his snuggle-pal.

I will miss his pretty face and sweet personality. I'll miss the funny way he shook his paws and made a disgusted face whenever they got wet. I'll miss his "jumping noise" - a little bbbbrrrrrmmmmp sound he made whenever he got up on the couch or the bed, like he had to kick into low gear to make the leap. I'll miss watching him loll in the sun by the doorwall in summer, and run to sit on the register whenever the heat kicked on in the winter. I'll miss what a good friend he was to me for 16+ years. Goodbye, Scuffy - I'm so lonesome for you.

UPDATE 11-19-2007:
This post, and some of the comments, at Laurence Simon's made me think of something else I'll miss - Whenever I whistled "Give Me The Simple Life," Felix would come and sit on my lap. He liked all whistling (good thing, as I come from a family of non-stop whistlers), but that one was his favorite. He did indeed like the simple life (something we had in common). And thanks to The Rangers for the kind words and prayers - It means a lot coming from fellow kitty lovers. Also, my sweet sister talks of Felix here.

GIVE ME THE SIMPLE LIFE
"Wake Up And Dream" 1945
Harry Ruby, Rube Bloom

I don't believe in frettin' and grievin',
Why mess around with strife?
I never was cut out to step and strut out -
Give me the simple life.

Some find it pleasant dining on pheasant,
Those things roll off my knife.
Just serve me tomatoes and mashed potatoes -
Give me the simple life.

A cottage small is all I'm after,
Not one that's spacious and wide.
A house that rings with joy and laughter
And the ones you love inside.

Some like the high road, I like the low road,
Free from the care and strife.
Sounds corny and seedy, but yes, indeedy -
Give me the simple life.

"GIVE ME THE SIMPLE LIFE" - Benny Goodman & His Orchestra, recorded 11/20/45

Godspeed Felix. All here at StrangeRanger are deeply sorry for your loss. He may not be there to snuggle, but 16 years of lovely memories must be some comfort to you now. Our prayers are with you.

"I'll miss his 'jumping noise'..."

Brings back memories of my Nanki-Poo. It's hard to lose 'em, especially after so long. My sympathies.

(Followed the link from your comment at Lar's.)

Nanki-Poo ... a name from one of my favorites, "The Mikado." I've been naming cats after jazz persons since Felix (had an Ella (Fitzgerald), now have Maxine (Sullivan) and Fletcher (Henderson). If I run out of jazz favorites, I could definitely go with Mikado. Thank you for your thoughtful comment.

Oh, geez, I am so sorry Felix! In some ways, it's harder to lose pets than people -- because our feelings for our animals are so simple and unmixed.

The sappy, stupid thing I tell myself is that it's good we live longer than animals because we get a chance to spoil a whole bunch of them in a lifetime (I'm an aggressive cat spoiler).

He looks like a siamese mix. Was he talky?

Thanks, Stoaty. He was an applehead (traditional) Siamese mix. He was quite talky when he was young, but had gotten quieter as he got older. He still could wail pretty piercingly when he wanted to, though. He had the nicest soft, breathy purr - It always reminded me of doves cooing. I sure miss him. The other 2 characters do, too, and are still looking for him (when they're not glued to me, that is). Maxine, a rescue from the wilds of my work who is not much into up-picking, has been sticking very close ... which means I am even more awash in her enormously shaggy fur than usual. She barely meows, just sort of squeaks and chirps - She sounds more like a cartoon mouse than a cat. Fletcher, also a traditional Siamese, is quite talky, and purrs like an Evinrude.

That "sappy, stupid thing" sounds neither to me ... my theory exactly.

I had a pair of lilac point siamese when I was a kid (Samson and Delilah) who were talky as all-get-out. Also batpoop crazy. Siamese are like a whole 'nother animal.

But they're all good. Except persians and those poor hairless dudes (brrrr).
