I wonder if any particular cat inspired Wain's rather unusual feline representation? ... Perhaps the creators of that holiday favorite, the Chia Pet, saw this.

Actually Trombonology, Wain's beautiful abstractions of cats can be directly related to his progression into schizophrenia. Before the onset of mental illness, he drew lovely but normal-looking portraits of cats dressed as humans. Personally, I prefer his later work but then it is surely no small price for these dark complex masterpieces for him to spend the rest of his life in an institution, battling his inner demons.
